Obama's Spidey Sense -- New Pres in Upcoming Spider-Man

Given the enormity of the problems facing America right now, a lot of people are hoping President-Elect Barack Obama will turn out to have superhuman powers. He may not, but at least he's got a friend who does.

In the upcoming "The Amazing Spider-Man" #583, Obama appears "palling around" (as Sarah Palin would say) with the arachnid superhero. In the comic, the new Commander-in-Chief meets Spidey, and the superchero thwarts an Inauguration Day scheme by a villain called the Chameleon. Marvel Comics' head Joe Quesada heard that Obama was a Spider-Man collector and proclaimed, "A Spider-Man fan moving into the Oval Office is an event that must be commemorated in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man."

Obama's not the first president to be featured in a comic book. Among others, Ronald Reagan made an appearance in the pages of "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns," and Bill Clinton had a spot in "Superman: The Man of Steel."

We'd also like to think the original inspiration for the morbidly obese Spider-Man bad guy, Kingpin, was former president William Howard Taft.

'Octopus UFO' Destroys Wind Turbine

A wind turbine in Britain was wrecked earlier this week when one of its 65-foot blades was ripped off by a UFO. People living in the nearby town of Lincolnshire reported seeing strange orangey-yellow lights headed in the direction of the wind farm earlier in the evening, and then they awoke at 4 a.m. to the sound of the turbine being smashed up.

"It looked like a giant explosion in the air," said one local. Another witness said he saw a "massive ball of light with tentacles going right down to the ground. ... It was huge. With the tentacles it looked just like an octopus." Hundreds have reported seeing the same phenomenon.

One blade was totally sheared off the giant windmill, while another was left mangled by the incident. The missing blade is thus far nowhere to be found, and UFO experts "are very excited" by the prospect that the crash could have been caused by a paranormal incident.

The study found that most guys like girls with big breasts and blonde hair. However, in new book Do Gentleman Really Prefer Blondes? American science journalist Jena Pincott has uncovered a series of scientific factors that are crucial in the mating game. First being the waist-to-height ratio.

The smaller the waist and the curvier the hips, the more attractive a woman looks at first glance, according to the expert.

Adding to that is perfectly symmetrical face – and a near-perfect female is ready. “Not all beautiful faces are symmetrical, not all symmetrical faces are beautiful. But symmetry often plays a role in attraction,” the Daily Star quoted Jena, as saying.

However, it is still the twin assets and blonde hair that catch a man’s eye the most, the study found.

Jena explained, “Breasts are an advertisement of age, health and good genes, which is why anthropologists think they’re crucial to sexual selection even in cultures that don’t eroticise the chest any more than the face.”

She added, “The human eye is attracted to light, bright colours, so blondes stand out more than brunettes.” 

Satyam Cheif Ramalinga Raju Raju to appear before Sebi on Saturday: Lawyer

Raju, who has been untraceable since his sent in his resignation on Wednesday, is believed to be at his farmhouse at Kompally on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

While there was no confirmation from police regarding his whereabouts, police officers said they had no orders yet to arrest him.  

However, Raju is scheduled to meet Sebi officials at Satyam’s corporate office on Saturday. Raju's lawyer,Bharat Kumar, said his client Ramalinga Raju will appear before SEBI at 1600 hrs on Saturday, PTI reported.

Earlier in the day, Sebi had summoned Raju at his corporate office at 4.30pm. Bharat Kumar had earlier said "I will be there", but he did not specify whether Raju too would be present in his corporate office to meet the Sebi officials.

Satyam staff won't get 2-month salary

Satyam Computer on Friday announced holding back employees salaries for two months, even as rumours were rife that the company might lay off close to 15,000 workers in the coming days.

The offices of Satyam Computer were rife today with the talks about forthcoming pink-slips at the company, which needs over Rs 500 crore every month just to meet its staff costs and has admitted that its cash position was not encouraging.

Employees said they have received an e-mail saying the company would hold back salaries for two months and asked staffers to bear with it.

However, the company spokesperson declined knowledge of any such e-mail and the issue would be looked into.

Even as the company spokesperson denied any layoff plans as of now, the rumours put the estimated job cuts at close to 15,000 by the end of this month.

Employees at the company said on condition of anonymity that they were hearing about imminent lay-off of people who were sitting on the bench or were close to completing their assigned projects. Besides, those being retained would be asked to take substantial salary cuts, they added.

At the same time, global HT consultancy firm Hay Group's Practice Leader Mark Thompson said that employees would suffer the most from the fraud.

In early 2000, the collapse of energy trader Enron had left thousands of people out of work, another 8,500 had lost their jobs at accounting firm Arthur Andersen; and Tyco eliminated 15,000 employees in February.

The non-descript village, Garagaparru, shot into the limelight with Satyam Computer growing to become the fourth largest IT firm in the country.

The villagers hail the development works undertaken by the Byrraju Foundation, the charitable arm of Satyam, and consider Raju as a good man. "He has done many development works in this region.

We hope he will tide over the present crisis," Rama Raju, a villager said. Several other villagers have expressed similar feelings.

The Satyam issue is the hot topic in the village ever since Raju tendered his resignation as chairman of the company. The Byrraju Foundation has taken up a number of development work in the fields of education, health, drinking water and several others in hundreds of villages in the coastal districts of West Godavari, East Godavari, Krishna, Visakhapatnam and others.

However, the developments in the company came as a shock to hundreds of shareholders in the West Godavari district. "I have lost Rs 64,000.

Many others in the town too lost large amounts," a shareholder in Eluru, who refused to be named, said. PTI.

Congress Pushes Obama to the Left on Stimulus

Joe references lots of Democratic concern over the Obama economic stimulus plan.

What’s striking about it is that the pressure is coming from the left much more than the right. Sure, there are Blue Dog Democrats concerned about deficits. But Obama has assuaged the fears of them by speaking openly and frankly about the perils of long-term debt and by consulting with them on a regular basis. As for Republicans, there are plenty of dead-enders who don’t care about a workable solution. But of the conservatives who believe that tax cuts will genuinely stimulate the economy, most are happy that Obama is providing $300 billion in tax cuts - even if they’re unsure exactly how those cuts will be applied.

The biggest opposition, however, is coming from what we might call the Paul Krugman left. These folks have argued from the beginning that the biggest risk in a stimulus package is not debt or too much government, but not going far enough. We need to encourage ordinary Americans to spend money and we need to give them jobs right away.

I actually think Obama planned it this way. Typically, the President starts big and bargains down to a workable compromise spending amount. But this time the opposite is happening. Obama is letting the groundswell of public opinion and Congressional pressure push him toward a more robust stimulus package.

It’s noteworthy that this is exactly what happened during the New Deal. FDR offered relatively conservative policies in the 1932 campaign, and focused almost entirely on solidifying the banks in 1933. But then came more pressure for interventionist government and job creation and, consequently, the WPA, PWA, CCC and the rest. He was pushed to the left after he took office.

I suspect that will be true of Obama too. Like FDR - or even Lincoln, who pushed a very moderate anti-abolitionist course in the first year of the Civil War - Obama is willing to be pushed by events to the left.

This is the exact opposite of what Bill Clinton did. Clinton tried to push through liberal policies that many conservative Democrats opposed. The Republicans were perfectly positioned to hold firm and push back against Clinton.

2009 is not 1993. It is more like 1935.

It might have been love at first sight with Amitabh, said veteran actress Jaya Bachchan when asked if she fell in love with the megastar instantly.

In conversation with fashion designer duo Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla on their TV chat show 'The First Ladies with Abu Sandeep', to be aired on NDTV Good Times, Jaya said 'Maybe' when asked whether love happened instantly.

Recounting her first meeting with Big B, the 60-year-old actress said: 'I first saw Amitji in an institute. I saw him, I liked him and I told my friends that you know he has got a personality. And they said what...he looks like a stick!'

'He was very thin and his face was full of his eyes. I remember I fought with my friends and said he is different.'

Jaya, who has been married to the actor for 35 years now, also narrated how the two had to tie the nuptial knot under hurried circumstances.

'We all, a group of friends, had decided that if 'Zanjeer' did well, we'll all go for a holiday to London. And it did well. But Amitji's parents objected and said that you can't go for a holiday with a girl without being married to her.'

'Of course, he had told his parents that this is the girl that he wanted to marry. So, he said what's the big deal, we'll get married. We just decided. I was shooting in Calcutta and he called me and said that this is what happened. I said it's okay with me. But you will have to ask my parents. He said okay I'll call them and call you back. He spoke to my parents and my parents were like 'ahem hmm mm ok',' she said.

The actress, who starred in films 'Chupke Chupke', 'Guddi', 'Bawarchi', 'Silsila', 'Abhimaan', 'Mili', 'Khamoshi', 'Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham', 'Fiza' and 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna' apart from several other hits, says a lot changed when she had to shift in with her in-laws after her marriage.

'There is a difference between a daughter and a daughter-in-law. I don't know why but you feel you don't need to respect your parents. You take your parents for granted. With your in-laws, you can't do that and later on things change. Today, I feel more of a Bachchan than a Bhaduri (her maiden name),' she said.

In the celebrity question round of the show, Maharani Padmini Devi of Jaipur asked Jaya about which role does she like the most - daughter, actress, wife, mother or grand mother?

To this, the actress, who is also a prominent member of Parliament promptly replied: 'Grandmother! It's of course grandmother. No responsibility.'

The entire episode of 'The First Ladies with Abu Sandeep' would be on air at 10 p.m. on Saturday.

'Aap Ki Kachehri' may be extended owing to popularity

New Delhi, Jan 8 (IANS) Reality show 'Aap Ki Kachehri' featuring former top cop Kiran Bedi might be extended by 52 episodes owing to its popularity among the audience.

Siddharth Basu, who heads Synergy Adlabs, the production house behind the show, revealed that STAR Plus has invited them to extend the series, originally commissioned for 52 episodes.

'We are looking closely at the feasibility,' he told IANS.

The show is among five top-rated Hindi general entertainment programmes, according to the latest data released by TAM Media Research. It has a television rating of 3.89 in the week ending Dec 27 last year.

'The fact that it is doing better than a few popular non-fiction shows in the last year, including all the big-ticket song and dance shows and is being much appreciated for being engaging, socially relevant and true to life, has driven the idea of extending the show,' Basu said.

'Aap Ki Kachehri' serves as an alternate dispute redressal forum for people who would want to solve their issues amicably and voluntarily. The problems and cases discussed on the show include marital, domestic, relationship-based and official problems.

Bedi plays a facilitator in delivering instant justice and informing the complainants and viewers of the laws that one can avail in such times of crisis.

'This is 'Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani' (every household's tale) with the difference that nothing is fake or scripted, yet it touches many chords as the human interest is high. This is real life courtroom drama of conflict and resolution dealing with common disputes and dilemmas that everyone can relate to,' Basu said.

'At the same time, it is an eye opener for many on relevant laws, rights, duties, and issues of balance, harmony and equity,' he added.
